Smoky Fava Bean & Turmeric Rice Skillet

GreenHouzeEatz Inspired Comfort Bowl

Ingredients

  • 2–3 cups pre-cooked white rice (seasoned with turmeric, black pepper, garlic powder, salt, and pepper)
  • 1 can fava beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1–2 handfuls frozen pearl onions
  • 1–2 handfuls frozen mixed vegetables (green beans, carrots, corn, peas, etc.)
  • 1–2 handfuls frozen spinach
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
  • Small amount of oil for skillet

Seasonings

Season to your spirit honestly 😂 but approximately:

  • Garlic powder
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Favorite all-purpose seasoning blend
  • Smoked paprika

Optional Toppings

  • Avocado
  • Butter
  • Extra smoked paprika
  • Cayenne pepper

Instructions

1. Sear the base vegetables

Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat and add a little oil. Add:

  • pearl onions
  • frozen mixed vegetables
  • frozen spinach

Let them thaw and cook down slightly. Allow some areas to lightly sear and caramelize for deeper flavor.

2. Add fresh vegetables + beans

Add:

  • green onions
  • red bell pepper
  • drained fava beans

Season with:

  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • pepper
  • favorite seasoning blend
  • smoked paprika if desired

Place the lid on the skillet for about 2 minutes to allow everything to soften and steam together.

3. Steam the rice

Spoon the cold pre-cooked rice evenly over the vegetable mixture. Add a small splash of water around the skillet. DO NOT STIR YET. Cover with a lid and let simmer for about 5–10 minutes, or until:

  • the water has absorbed
  • the rice is heated through
  • steam rises through the skillet

4. Finish the skillet

Once heated through, stir everything together gently. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Turn off the heat.

To Serve

Spoon into bowls and top with:

  • avocado
  • butter if desired
  • smoked paprika
  • cayenne pepper
  • cracked black pepper

Serve warm.

Notes

  • Rinsing canned fava beans helps reduce sodium.
  • Smoked paprika adds a rich, slow-cooked flavor.
  • The avocado balances the warmth and spice beautifully.
  • This recipe works well for leftover rice and freezer vegetables.
  • Can easily be customized with mushrooms, kale, zucchini, chickpeas, or herbs.

A comfort bowl with pantry roots, ancestral echoes, and “I’m not wasting this rice” energy. 🌱🔥
